One trend that is gaining steam is when someone is buying a used car, they want the maintenance records.Most people are now wanting to see if a car they want to buy has a record of maintenance. Because after all if somebody took care of a car you can trust it will last longer. So when you have a car it is more important to keep good records.Because quite a few buyers are now wanting to see that.

So some things you can do is every time you go in to get service for your car keep a receipt of it.  In my San Diego auto repair business I make sure to give all my clients a receipt of the work that was done.  Make sure whichever company you take your car into does the same.This could be the deciding factor in whether or not you get the price you wanted or have to get something less.

Well in the economy we are in that is not a luxury anymore.  Most people can’t afford to just go out and get a new car.People are forced to hang on to their old ones.What it means is you will have to make an effort to maintain their cars.

One of the major items of maintenance is being certain you are able to pass a smog check.  Once your car gets older it is required by law.If you are unable to pass the smog check, that can be the start of expensive repairs.  I know this first hand running my San Diego smog check shop. 

There are some things you are able to do to help make certain you pass the test.You can make an effort to keep your car tuned and maintained.You can make certain you change the oil filter and oil.You can ensure that you have a muffler in good shape. 

This is where you can lose money.If you are unable to pass the smog check you might be in for some expensive repairs.So by ensuring that you follow these maintenance tips you will be able to save money.By doing the right things in maintaining your car now you will save yourself from major repairs later.

Now when a family is in need of a new car they are forced to look into buying a used car.  This is evident in all of the financial problems the big 3 carmakers are having.There sales have plummetted.

But most families will still need some sort of transportation.  But when money is tight families have to choose the cheaper alternative.That alternative choice is a used car. 

As a San Diego auto repair shop owner I am asked to inspect some of these used cars.  Because when you are buying a used car you don’t want a lemon.  So by getting a proper inspection done you can avoid costly problems.

So when you are examining the used cars, take in mind these 2 things to look for.  First you want to check the brakes.  We do San Diego brakes in our shop.  So I know first hand that brake repairs can become expensive.  If you purchase a car that the brakes weren’t maintained it could become expensive.Last thing you want to happen is the need to get the entire braking system replaced.  So make sure the brakes are good.

Second, take care to make sure that it is able to run clean.Said another way, will it be able to pass a smog check.  In my business I do smog tests in San Diego.The last thing I am sure you want to happen is to buy a car that is in need of expensive repairs.Especially if the repairs are going to involve any emmission problems.

If you make a purchase of a used car that can’t pass a smog test that is not a good situation.It is a sign of a previous owner not taking care of it.What probably happened is they didn’t do any tuneups or oil changes.These could be the start of a lot more problems in the future.

If you make sure to inspect these few items you can save yourself some money. By not inspecting you can lead yourself into some big repairs.  When you are trying to save money I am sure you don’t want that.

In the economy we are in, rather than purchasing a new vehicle, a lot of families are going to choose to buy a used car.

With that in mind, there are going to be a lot of financial considerations that go into place when buying a used car.

When I talk about the financial considerations, I am not just referring to the purchase price.

When you represent a family and were really looking for ways to save money, you obviously don’t want to buy a used vehicle that has extra repair expenses that you weren’t prepared for.  Especially if those extra expenses were not in your budget.

So one of the important things you need to be aware of is smog checks.The last thing you probably did not want to do is make expensive repairs due to a failed smog test.  I have seen too many used cars in my San Diego auto repair business have this happen.

So when you are making the purchase of that used car, some things to consider are here.

Under a 2005 law that was passed, if you have a 1976 vehcile or older, you will not have to ever take a smog check.  But if it is newer than that your vehicle will be tested based on the state emission law.  You can find out about your state by calling the Bureau
of Automotive repair at (800) 952-5210.

If you live in California and are buying a used car you may need a San Diego smog check.If the purchase or registration is in California for the very first time, you are going to need a smog test.

Other than that, if the vehicle is going into it’s 5th or 7th year, a smog check will need to be done biennially.

If you purchase the vehicle in another state and live in California, you are going to have to find out if your car can pass the test.In general California is a lot more strict.

With that being the case, you want to keep that in mind when purchasing your vehicle.

Costs for a smog test San Diego generally run between $30 to $80.But as previously mentioned, it isn’t the biggest cost.The biggest cost will be if costly repairs are needed.

So in the process of the purchase of a used car, be sure to determine if the car has recently passed a smog check.

You don’t want any surprise expenses popping up when your goal was to save money by buying a used car.
